Hello everyone!
SO, I have gone chicken crazy. (Finally, after 4 years of owning them!) I currently have 27 chicks and 1 1/2 adult hens. My hens are a Jersey Giant and a Barred Rock named Spinner. 1/2 a chicken due to her, erm, eccentric nature. I remember the day that we went to pick her out. Standing over the brooder at the TSC, milling through the piles of chicks, I spotted her. My first words in her presence were, "Make sure not to pick that one, she seems retarted." Well, out of probably 100 chicks we ended up with her, and she was a family favorite right off. Also, she's never laid and egg in her life.
Anyway, I've got
1 Buff Orpington
1 Australorp
10 Purebred Amaraucanas, Paul and Angela Smith stock (2 Splash, 2 Blue, 5 Black, 1 White)
4 Candy Corn Polish
1 Isabel Cuckoo Orpington
1 Blue Orpington
1 Buff Brahma
3 Splash Silkies
2 Salmon Faverolles
3 Black Copper Marans

There are more on the way so this will be updated/edited from time to time.

Anyway, I've been planning to breed the Amaraucanas,CC Polish, Silkies, BCMs, and also adding some Olive and Spearmint Eggers. For my first year or two I'll test what the offspring look like, what they lay, etc. before I even consider selling chicks/hatching eggs. Also, I will have extra roosters from the chicks I have at the moment, but I don't know which ones will be roos yet. If you're interested in any you can PM me, I'm in Northern VA but do travel to MD and WV frequently. I can't guarantee anything but you're name will be somewhere on a list.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

:th Wow! 35 breeds in 5 years. I could never complete that much lol. Good for you!

If you have any questions about breeding programs or procedures, just ask me!

Thx! Ok, so I've been trying to get an answer to this for a while...How long can a hen store the sperm(s) of a rooster before the eggs become infertile, and how long after the hen mates again will her eggs be fertilized again? I hope this isn't a hard question, nobody has been able to give me a straight answer yet. :)
