Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Hi Angela!

So glad you stopped by! I love the names of all the towns you guys are talking about. Sounds like something in a novel set in Montana somewhere...lol. I would love to get some purebred Ameracuana eggs from someone, do you ship yours Brooster? I am wishing for an incubator, I would love to go through that with my daughter, she wants to hatch our own. I wonder if I will have any of my girls decide to go broody, but I somehow don't think so. I do have one BA that is looking quite classic, developing very slowly, and is a wonderful type. She is my last holdout, hasn't started laying yet. Maybe she has some heritage blood in her? wishful thinking, lol If I do get a broody, I would try to buy some nice eggs and have her hatch those.

We are gearing up for a snowstorm that is supposed to wreak some havoc here. We let the horses out early, and the chickens are all ready getting blown all over the place. We are due to get 2 to 2 and a half feet of snow, so they will no doubt be stuck in the coop tomorrow. It's not very big, they really just go in to roost at night, and lay. Next year for the winter, I have to make some changes, and purchase some tarps for the run to shield from the wind.

Ok,, off to get to the store to get some supplies. I hope we don't' lose power so at least we can have the TV while we are stuck inside!

Lol, maybe! Last year, I did build fold-down seats in the run, so I could sit and watch the chickens. In the summer I go out every morning with my coffee and sit in the run for at least an hour. I usually take treats, and the chickens hop up in my lap. See...I'm still in my pj's.

I put hinges on the seats to pop back up so the chickens wouldn't poop all over them, but somehow they find ways to poop on them anyway.
I can't wait for warm chicken watching weather.
That is great ... But that is why I did not put chairs inside of the run... I was afraid of the poop all over them. We do have chairs and a bench outside of the run. When I want to sit with the girls I sit on the big bucket with lid that holds some of their food. For some weird reason they don't get on that at all. It is so relaxing to just sit, watch and just be... I love it when they come sit on my knee and tell me all the gossip I missed for the day;)
I let out & feed the horses and birds early as well. It did rain last night and we are supposed to get LOTs of rain today... My friend, who is just 15 mins away & 1,000 higher then us, should get some snow.... Though no were near as bad as you MB. Though we may get some thunder storms today. One town nearby has already reported Hail...
Stay safe every one and have a great day.

Wow! We drive right through Foscoe on our way to our place in Banner Elk!! So, I know right where that is. Maybe we could meet sometime. Stokesdale is our closest little grocery store - maybe 5 miles. Wish we had a 2hr delay on a Friday - you don't have to make those late days up like you do the all day closures :)

Yes, I have had really good luck with all my shipped eggs this year. I've had super hatches and I am just using the same old LG incubator I've had for several years. I did get a new Brinsea in December and got 4 Isbar chicks from the 5 eggs that were shipped to me. I've got 7 blue ameracauna eggs in it now and they should hatch next week.

I will get some pics of these little Mille fleur d'uccles - they are adorable! I probably won't keep all of them - I just thought they were so pretty and cute and would add some color to my flock :)

Hooray for Friday!
Angela

That's awesome you have a place in Banner Elk! I love living in this area.

I got a Brinsea for Christmas. It is so much easier to use than my Hovabator. My Ameraucanas are blue. Such pretty girls! I can't wait until they start laying.

MB, my Ameraucanas haven't started laying yet, and my roosters were both eaten by raccoons

So I'm hoping to maybe hatch more Ameraucana eggs soon too. In the meantime, I have them in with my EE roo. And honestly, my EE eggs are brighter and more colorful than the eggs these Ameraucanas were hatched from, but I'm curious to see how blue they are when they start laying.

Good luck with the storm. It looks like it's going to be a BIG one!

Happy Friday everyone! Still no Greta, but that's getting easier everyday. I am so excited, we are paying off our home equity loan today!! That will save us $300 per month. :celebrate.

No eggs yesterday so they better lay today.

Thanks Buddy! I assume it was her - even though all 3 barred rocks are 25 weeks, she's got the largest comb & wattles. I'm SO excited. These are my first batch of chickens and I have been waiting so long to see an egg. (The funny colored one is the fake wooden one).

Congratulations Sluggo.,, What a pretty egg, and a pretty pullet! I have two BR's, and I love them! I was so happy when I got my first egg, it only gets better from here! Welcome to the thread!

Quick update before we lose power, the winds are really picking up here, and allready have about 6 inches of snow, and the storm's worst is hitting after midnight... Wind blowing so hard, it's blowing snow very fine up into my coop. It was too windy and snowing too hard to do anything about it. It's a fine layer of snow, but I imagine through the night, it will be more. Next year I have to get some tarps up on the run so that I can block the wind and also it would have maybe stopped some of this snow from blowing in. urg... live and learn.

Wish me luck guys,, the worst kicks in after midnight,, and it's just yuck out!

Hi everyone! I'm Jen, a chicken newbie from Central IL. I have four 20 week hens (2 leghorns, 1 Maran (I am assuming a BCM she was from the maran collection) and a Barred Plymouth Rock). At the moment they are in their grow out coop and I hope to have my handy man start building a bigger coop for me in late Feb early March. We have had a pretty mild winter (lowest being 3 degrees for one night & averaging about 35 degrees everyday). Only one of my hens has started to show slight signs of maturing to the point of lay. Her comb has came in and it is getting a darker red. The rest of them have the tiny comb. It would be nice if they would start to lay now, but if not thats ok too.

To the thread Jen! so happy to have another egg waiten, chicken lovin member here! Most of us have just started getting eggs within the last month or two. Some of us are experienced chicken owners, either waiting on new chicks, or waiting for their older hens to start laying after slowdown or molt. All are welcome, and it's a great place to come and just give daily updates and ask any questions you may have!

Cheers!
