Well they do play in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga which is the 1st league in Germany but since Ice hockey is not as big here as it is in America I wouldn't want to compare them to each other.
If Pittsburgh Penguins would play a game against Adler Mannheim the result would probably be 20:1 or something like that.

Ice hockey is ranked low in the U.S. when compared to football, baseball, basketball, NASCAR, and who knows what else. It is more popular in the northern parts of the country (original six teams all in the north) and is gaining some ground in the other regions that have teams. I think mostly from "transplants" from the northern areas dragging others to games and teaching them what the game is about.

I would say the players are 70% German, 20% Canadian and 10% American. Not many players from other countries.
