Anyone use trap nests?

Have you tried using wing bands with numbers on them? What I use for wing bands are actually meant to be lamb ear tags out of some kind of plastic, I get them from Premier One, they are the one-piece bend-around type, just similar to the metal wing bands made for chickens. None of my birds has lost their wing band yet. It's one good way to identify individual birds.

wing bands and numbers.. that would work for me.. do you attach the bands to the web on the front of the wing?? does it take a special tool?

I searched and searched for that thread about morans with the trap door picture.. I just cannot find it again.

I even PM 'ed someone from BYC who semed to know how to make one,,,,,,, but no reply..

I started a new thread about trap nests, and again,,,,,, no replies..

I have never ever gotten a response to any question I have ever asked on this site...........ever.

edit: OK I got 1, now..

Yes, that's how you attach them. The kinds I use, you do have to have a special pliers to attach them.

Today I was wing banding some newly purchased roosters and found it very difficult to attach the plastic tags I'd used before, so I used some metal tags and that worked better. (Now, I had no trouble punching the plastic bands onto full grown male geese, but these roosters must have had tough skin.)

just an update.. I built a trap nest.

I still have to install the trigger.

It got cold and nasty here again, and I do not want to light a fire in the shop stove.. so it will have to wait a day or so.. will post pictures

can also be used as a regular nest when not trapping..

I have the trap nest finished and set. now all I need is at least one hen out of the 55 I have to try it out

It has been set for about a half hour so time to go check it out.

it takes them awhile to get used to a new nest..

Cool beans! Post pics when you get a chance

If anyone wants store-bought trap nest fronts, the lowest price I have found is at http://dblrsupply.pinnaclecart.com/products/Trap_Nest_Front-1360-269.html .

Building plans for trap nest--- well, there is one model based on an old-time rabbit trap at http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Trap+Nests.html. Pretty detailed instructions with photos.

An old plan for a trap nest made from 'grocery boxes' is found in Cobleigh's Handy Farm Devices, found at http://journeytoforever.org/farm_library/device/devices5.html. There is an illustration and brief instruction.

'Profitable Poultry Production' has a couple of trap nest plans in Chapter Six which is the chapter on breeding, and also there is a 'trap nest made from one board' in Chapter Five .

My current plans are to buy some trap nest fronts when I can afford some and perhaps build the nests to put them on if I can. I like the look of the wooden nests in Murray McMurray catalog, if I can't work out how to build my own I'll try to get one of those to put the trap nest on.
