Anyone use turbine vents on their coops?

My husband had me buy one for ours....if anyone uses one, I'm wondering if you thought it was a good idea, bad idea?

I suggested a turbine and the response seemed to be that it was overkill. Still seems like a good idea to me, though....

I've got a couple on the top of my house to cool the attic....

We have one on one of our coops. It doesnt get much of a breeze in that area...so I hooked up a fan under it to push the hot air out. Works pretty good!!

Good idea!

I have one on mine and it works really well. Where I live there is almost always a breeze blowing so the turbine draws a lot of hot air out of the coop. I can really feel the difference.

The ones I've known in barns, snow filters in during the winter and you really don't want that in a coop (for moisture reasons). Thus it would have to be close-off-able in winter, which would require you to have plenty of other ventilation available for winter use.

Frankly though, if you have enough breeze to make the turbine go, you have enough breeze to do a good job of exchanging coop air through large *normal* ventilation openings anyhow. The reason they are used in attics and other structures like that is because, there, unlike in a coop, you CAN'T have great big whackin' openings for the breeze to just blow through.

Thank you for the input. I should have performed a search before I asked, seeing that post was so recent! Sorry! My husband works in construction, so I'm at an advantage here, and I hadn't considered the snow issue (we do have an issue in our horse barn with a different ventilation thing), because I didn't know what these were or how they worked, so after reading your replies, I asked him what his intentions were.

He planned to put a door on the inside of the ceiling, where the turbine area could be closed off for the winter, as he said yes, snow would be a problem in teh winter. He planned to use this to help the air movement in the hot, humid summer. We won't have electricity out there, unless we run an extension cord, which if it gets too hot, we would do, but he thought this may help with air movement.

There will be additional ventilation for the coop, this is not the only means. The coop will also have soffit all the way around it, and I'm not sure if he's still running a ridge vent as was originally planned? Probably not, that would probably be overkill! But then, might also help the air coming in thru the soffit have a place to get out in the wintertime, with the turbine closed off. I didn't ask him that. Originally, he planned to have a ridge vent on the roof. He builds livestock buildings and things for a living...this is just quite a miniature version...

But I appreciate the input! Don't want to question him....but you've all been there....we have not!
