ARE CORRUGATED ASPHALT ROOF PANELS OKAY FOR RUN?

I would like a covered run and was wondering if you knew if corrugated asphalt panels are safe to use? They have a lifetime warranty but I wasn't sure if after time they start to break down? If it does will that be unsafe for the chickens if they eat it?

They should be as safe as using shingles, but will be far less durable than metal, and you need a solid surface such as plywood to support them.

I also doubt they are strong enough to walk on

They are mainly for use OVER an exisiting roof system
Metal is the most cost effective material, since it will pretty much last forever if you paint it now an then
You can also use metal with FAR less framework than the asphalt panels require

I was planning on using corrugated fiberglass panels over the run but the corrugated asphalt were 1/2 the cost. Would you recommend metal roofing over a run? What kind exactly would you recommend? The steel metal roof panels we are putting on the coop are twice as expensive as the corrugated asphalt. I am definitely open for suggestions!

The metal roof on my house is 115 years old, and there's a coop in the backyard nearly 100 years old, with it's original metal roof

In the long term metal is always cheaper

! We already paid for the asphalt panels but hadn't picked them up. We can get a refund on those

Update: problem solved! My DH just arrived home w/ our coop steel roof sheets. It came with two giant extra sheets of steel roof, one on top and one on the bottom to protect our panels from getting scratched- just enough to cover our run

That is amazing about your metal roofs, I had no idea they could last that long. My DH said he was planning on putting a steel one on our home when it is time to reroof. Do you paint it just for aesthetics, or is it for maintenance so it doesn't rust?

Most of the newer metal materials have the paint baked on at the factory, and can last up to 20 years before needing a coat of paint, and can be had in many colors
