Bag pipes

Can anyone on BYC play them?

I've always wanted buy a set and learn to play really bad but it seems like I have really wanted to over the past two weeks.

My grandfathers parents were from scotland, and grandad loved the bag pipes. i like them to, though i can understand why many people dont. they have a....lets say, interesting sound!

I'm going to get my fill of them this weekend when my daughter dances at the Celtic Festival down to Silver Springs.

I like bag pipes, but two or more pipe bands within earshot playing different tunes at the same time is...

You can make your own cheap imitation bagpipes. The ingredients you need follow:

1/4 yard of plaid flannel fabric
2 kazoos
2 rubber chickens

With a friend, each wrap one of the chickens in the flannel.
Stick a kazoo in the chicken's beak. (Opposite end of the kazoo from the end you hum in.)
Have your friend hum the drone note (one low note that they hum continually)
You hum the melody of your favorite bagpipe ballad.

It sounds pretty close, but looks pretty silly. Amazing Grace works well. Also Silent Night at Christmas time.

My sister plays them and is in the local pipeband here and they compete in major competitions like Highland park in Chicago and in Wisconsin...they also play for weddings, funerals, events, schools...


She picked it up after my father died 11 years ago and one was played at his funeral. She is now 48 years old...so it's never too late to learn.

I love bagpipes but it looks pretty hard to play nor do I have the lung capacity to blow. I used to play a clarinet when I was in 8th grade for a short time.

Enjoy them! Do NOT buy those Pakistan made bagpipes, they are not made well or sound right. A set of GOOD bagpipes would set you back about $1500 or more. Naill, McCallum, Hardie, and Henderson are all good manufactors of Bagpipes. You can buy a synethic one roughly about $500. I think Gibson makes those.

get yourself a practice chantor and learn the fingering before trying to deal with a bag too. There's also a really cool electric chantor (for practice) that sounds just like bagged pipes...$$!

If you can get in with a band, they may be able to help get you started.

I would love to learn, but I cannot find anyone in the area to help me out.

My DS had started playing with the glen erin band in lansing Mi, but she got busy with kids and that was the end of that (for now I hope).

I love going to hear the mass bands at festivals... a whole football field ful of bands is quite moving.
