Baked Mac and Cheese - A side dish?

Here in VA, we consider mac and cheese a side dish. I was just shown a M-F menu with today's meal being baked mac and cheese. Nothing else. Just mac.

Now I rarely refer to mac as baked, because that's the only kind we do around here. However, I still wouldn't fix just mac for supper. If I cooked Sunday supper at Mother Overo's house, and I just cooked mac.... everyone would be like ".??????."

What say you? Is mac a side dish or a meal?

Miami you can't just have rum. You have to vote for the mac too.

I consider it a side dish! Unless you add a protein. Throw in some shrimp, lobster or red meat. Then *maybe* you could pass it off as the main course.

I would consider it a side dish but DD cooks it as a meal sometimes.
She also cooks up some rather exotic 'Oriental' dishes with noodles and LOTS of spices (pepper hot).

It really depends for us here. Most of the time I would say it's a side dish, but every now and then I just want mac and cheese.
