Barred Rock Chick

Hi, Can someone tell me if my Petra is in fact a Peter? They are Barred Rock chicks from a hatchery. I have two, my other is very dark, dark feathers, dark feet. Petra is much lighter, white and black feathers, light feet. Also any tips on rehoming them if they are a cockerel as we can't have roosters in the city. Oh and they are about a week old.

Too young to know for certain but I would say its a cockerel.

Much, much too young to know for sure, but with that big of a spot on the head, it could possibly be a cock.

Do you see more black in the wing feathers than the white? If so, it's a girl. Generally, a BR cockerel has double barring gene, so he has more white color than black. I can not see very clear in the photo, but she seems to have more black color. Some birds are tricky though. It will be more obvious in a couple weeks.

I do see more black in the wing than white though my other barred rock's wing is almost fully black with some light patterning.

I have 4 BR that are 1 week old today, and I'm very anxious about their status - I've been checking the wings for more white too, lol. Yours have much bigger wings than mine. My buff orps (same age) have MUCH more wing feathering.

They are similar to my other ones wings. I was holding it out a bit. Also I noticed although my other *looks* smaller, it's the same size and just an optical illusion because black always makes things look smaller.

My b. rocks DEFINITELY have less developed wings than the one in your pic (and my buff orps). Here's a better comparison:

My guess is roo from the head spot and white on the wings. Keep us updated!

That's interesting. My buff has less developed wings than my barreds.
