barred roo over splash hen? what will i get?

It's also hard to tell if the barred roo is homozygous for barring. If not, then you'll only get 50% barred, so it will work out sort of like this with the blue hen:
25% blue barred
25% blue (non-barred)
25% black barred
25% black

with the splash hen, it would be 50% blue barred and 50% blue.
Wow that's a lot to take in....how do u keep it all straight. Lol. So from what I'm understanding, no matter what color his barring is, I will end up with blue bars. Which I am happy about. This will be an interesting project

Could the barred gene possibly produce sex linked chicks???
Not if the rooster is the barred parent.

A "pure" or homozygous rooster always has barred offspring, male or female.
A part or heterozygous rooster has 50% barred offspring, regardless of gender.
A barred hen (hens can only be het barred) mated to a non-barred rooster has barred sons and solid daughters.

The blue/black/splash has been well covered here.

There's a great sex link thread by tadkerson that tells exactly what crosses you can use to make sex links.

Very well explained.

Thank you so much for the info!! That makes sense. I will have to look up that thread by tadkerson. I can't wait to start breeding them and see what I get!!

You can breed a barred hen with almost anything and you'll have a sex linked chick. I've had this cross with Silver Phoenix x BR, Silkie/Cochin x BR, EE x BR and a few others. A Barred Rock male, as long as it has two barring genes and is the normal BR male (or Cuckoo Marans or Dominique) male, will produce all barred chicks, at least to some degree. May not be great barring, but it will be there.

If the male has only one barring gene, as does my Delaware x BR rooster, who did not happen to inherit the barring gene from his Del sire though he could have, you will get some barred and some solid colored chicks. This rooster's brother got 2 barring genes, one from the BR mother and one from his Delaware sire, so appeared like a pure BR male, though he was only technically half.

This chick is from that single factor barred rooster over my splash Rock hen:

Very interesting! The pics definetly help out a lot! And that chick is just too cute! ....from what I seen on the pics of the roo I'm getting, he looks like his shackle feathers wing feathers and neck feathers are the only feathers that are barred. The rest of him (his undercarriage and breast feathers) all seem to be blue. So is that to say that he probably only carries one barred gene? ...Wish he had a barred hen instead so I could create sex linked chicks...

Sounds a lot like what folks get when they cross a blue Rock and a Delaware, a sort of Blue Delaware. Yard full 'o Rocks did that. I'd say yes, he is only single factor barred, then.

I am getting two araucana this weekend. One is a barred araucana rooster. And the other is a double tufted splash araucana hen. Both are rumpless. Can anyone tell me what I would get crossing these two?

If only you had a Splash roo over a Barred hen you would create a Blue Sexlinked Cross...

here is how the chicks would look like

Blue Sex Link Babies.. Male on left, female on right.

Yea that's what I'm beginning to understand... The guy has a splash roo but not a barred hen. And I didn't just want to get splash chicks from breeding. I figured the barred gene would be interesting to work with.
