Hi, it depends on what you mean by best. Are you wanting to know which lay the most eggs? Or which are best meat birds? Or maybe which do best is show?
Glad to meet you and welcome to BYC. You need to think about WHY you want chickens. Do you want eggs? Are you planning to eat them? What is your climate? How much space do you have? You might prefer bantams to standards size if your space if limited. Here is a great article about Pickin' the Right Frickin' Chicken.
Do you have chickens currently? Or are you planning, or even just daydreaming?
If you want to look around here, you can browse various forums, including the Learning Center. Or you can look for articles written by, and reviewed by, members.
Here are my favorite beginning articles that helped me as a newbie. I hope you will find them helpful as well. All articles are short, have illustrations, and reviews, which are often worth looking at for the comments.
3. Ventilation (important to chicken health), with helpful links to coop designs organized by climate (because what is just right for my New England hens won't work for my brother's Arizona chickens)
3(a). Farmers Almanac on Building Coops (Includes size requirements!) Allowing plenty of space for chickens is really important because, even as chicks, they will start pecking each other or plucking their own feathers, or become unhealthy if they are overcrowded. Here is a link to Colorado State Extension's publication on space and temperature requirements for chicks as they age.
A. Use the SEARCH button, but use the Advanced Search choice, and select ARTICLES at the top of the box. Just enter your keyword(s) and scroll through your results!
B. I find it helpful to notice the rating and reviews. All articles are by BYC members, and all the reviews/ratings are as well. The ratings help a newbie like me sort the most useful and reliable articles.
C. You can bookmark the articles or posts you think you want to refer to again using that bookmark icon at the top of articles or posts. You can find them again by clicking on your own avatar and looking at the list of bookmarks you have built up!
Welcome to BYC!
There isn't really a "best chicken breed". That all depends on personal needs and preferences. What are you looking for in a chicken? Climate hardiness? Egg laying abilities? Temperament? Looks? If you give us some specific qualities you'd like, we can recommend breeds that would work well for you.
There are a lot of amazing breeds of chickens out there, but my all time favorite is probably the silkie bantam! They’re adorable, (usually) somewhat cuddly, and they make great broodies and excellent mothers. They are awesome pets!
ALL of them!! ❤ Seriously though, lots of perfect breeds out there depending on what you are looking for in a chicken. @Boppo has left you with the link to picking the right chicken above.
Salve (Latin for hello)! All breeds have pros and cons…but to (hopefully) answer your question, I don’t have a favorite because I haven’t tried out all the different breeds, and each chicken of a specific breed is different .
