Best Treatment Details for Egg Yolk Peritonitis?

Hi all,

We're at Day 4 post-surgery now and Vally is going fantastically well. Basically back to her normal self and very energetic. It's hard trying to keep her quiet to prevent her damaging herself or tearing stitches out, but so far we've been very successful.

Here are the photos from the surgery. 6 is the incision they made to access the mass right beside her cloaca. 3 is the removed uterus and that yellow-brown stuff inside is narcotic (dead/dying) tissue caused by previous scarring and damage. 4 is the mass of coagulated lash eggs they found in the uterus (they said the smell of this was absolutely putrid!)

If I have any advice after this experience, it's to seek out multiple opinions. While the first vet was an avian vet (and was fantastic in his own right), I didn't get the sense that much could be done after our discussion, whereas the other vet was willing to try something a bit different given it was Vally's last hope. These vets didn't jump in assuming normal anesthetic would work, and instead did some research into how to carry out this procedure with minimal risk possible, which is something I am so grateful for. I believe they did a very light anesthetic with a powerful analgesic.
Thank you for the update and photos.
Very interesting.

I'm glad to hear Vally is doing well, I hope she makes a full recovery.

Please do keep us updated on her progress.

@Laraeaf, can I ask how is Vally doing now ?
She’s doing well! She’s come into a moult, which means the Suprelorin implant has definitely worked, so that is a big relief. She’s feeling a bit sorry for herself with the moulting, but is otherwise just the same as always!

We went to the vet the other day to get her stitches out. When she was weighed prior to the surgery, she was 1.4kg and the mass they removed weighed approximately 400g!! When she was weighed a few days ago, she weighed 1.8kg. So in a span of 2 weeks, she gained 800g, which is so impressive!

I'm happy to hear that she had such a good outcome !
Maybe you know that already but once she's over the moult, the implant will make her gain a lot of weight..expect her to become chubby and fluffy !

I'm very excited for her to be chubby and fluffy, because she's always been a bit skinny and scrappy!

I've also had one of my other chooks (with a similar background) implanted, and after a few weeks of her feeling a little cranky and down (I'm guessing due to the hormone changes) she's the healthiest, perkiest and friendliest she's ever been!

This is Light being chubby and Fluffy. (Of course she likes to stand on carpet...)

Honestly, I'd just lay her to rest. Any method, IF successful, will only extend her life minorly, and she'll still be uncomfortable.
Agree. I lose sleep trying to do treatments on mine in the past.. end result is eventual heartache. Maybe 2 in 10 had good life for a few months. So very hard. My heart needs a break.
While i will take care of my remaining 30 mixed flock to my best ability, knowledge and strength, I don't think i will be restocking my flock.
Love the support here, thank you all
