bird netting support

Hello,

I have a fenced in run that is about 50'x50'. I have fencing that is 8-12' high all of the way around it. Today a hawk took a silkie of mine. I wanted to put netting over the top of the run about 10-20' in the air. I am unsure how to do this and what is the best way to support this. I can zip tie to the existing fence, so that is not an issue.

Any ideas with photos would be appreciated.

I found the orange plastic netting used in construction was better priced than bird netting. But after several years, it rots. I have a hen and chicks in about the same type pen. And, I have hawks. This time I took the bright plastic tape used for tying on stakes - orange or pink. It stretches. Tied one end to fence across to the other side and zig zagged about 2 ft. apart across the top. It's light weight so it moves in the wind. So far - no problems. It's working for me so far and a roll runs less than 3.00 for a 200' roll.

Ayes screwed into the top help support the centers. You can buy and run flight pen netting support wire to connect from the center supports to the outer fencing so the netting stays elevated. Good luck, it can be done. Lots of good places to buy online, many of the more exotic fowl keepers can share with you where they prefer to buy from for the best deals.

thanks for all of the info. I have some telephone poles that I will be putting to good use now.

I also have some steel cable that will be getting fastened to the top of it.

I went online to buy some deer netting and got a tad confused. I sent a question to the seller who never got back to me so I'll ask it here. Is there a difference in the deer netting and bird netting? I saw some that would work on my run but it was the bird netting. It's the netting you would put over blueberry bushes. I was wondering if that stuff was lighter in gauge than deer netting?

Anyone know?

Deer netting and bird netting for plant protection are both usually plastic and will not hold a snow load or hold up long term to the sun. Look up aviary netting when wanting to top your runs so it will last.
