Black Copper Maran pullet or something else?

Cuckoo Maran. I don’t think it’s a hybrid. My reasoning is that with my hybrid Marans and in my own breeding programs when you cross a feathered leg breed with a non-feathered breed the chicks do not have the cleanest looking leg feathers. More sparse and sometimes raggedy. The chick pictured has nice thicker feathering which you get from breeding feathered to feathered. I’m also going to go against the grain and say pullet. Any Maran cockerel I have had by 5 weeks would be pinked and have a bigger comb than the one pictured.

I'm a bit sad to have a Cuckoo Maran as I was really excited for a Black Copper... but I am glad to hear that you think it's a pullet. Thanks for the reply!

I was trying to see if I had any pictures of my pure Maran cockerels at that stage, but I couldn’t find any. However, this is a picture of one of my Maran hybrid breeding project cockerels at only 4 weeks old. As you can see he is pretty pink with some comb going on which has been my experience for Marans and Maran hybrid cockerels at 4-5 weeks. Now his legs are more feathered because I bred Maran to Mille Fleur to get him so his legs are well feathered.

Very helpful, thanks!

Definitely looks like a Cuckoo Marans. I’m no good at judging male/ female so I’ll leave that to someone else 🙂
I’ve had both Cuckoo and Black Copper Marans, they’re great birds.
Incidentally Marans is the singular as well.
My Marans in the picture (Opal) is super sweet! I would recommend Marans to anyone, they are solid birds.
