Black Mouth Cur dogs; How are they with chickens?

I've been looking around for a playmate for my puppy, Maggie, and came across a beautiful Aussie Shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix. He's somewhere between 8-13 months old. I'm not sure how long it's been since the posting was updated. (Or if he's still available for that matter. I'm going to call them tomorrow.) Before I even consider bringing him home though, I need to know how his breed does around chickens. Being half Aussie Shepherd is definitely a plus. Does anyone have or have experience with Black Mouth Curs around chickens/ducks? How do they do with them? I have a dog yard that Maggie stays in most of the time, though she is allowed out into the back "field" where the chickens roam. She is a lab mix, but she leaved the chickens alone. I trust her alone with them. The new dog would definitely have to stay in the dog yard (as would Maggie) until I knew how he was with my flock.
Anyways, all rabbit trails aside, my real question is how do Black Mouth Cur dogs usually do with poultry?
Thanks for any input in advance. :)

I have a full blood Black Mouth Cur. He is really a problem with the baby chicks I keep inside until they grow up, and when I have a sick hen in the utility room, he spends the day in there trying to figure out a way to get to her. I love my Black Mouth Cur, he is very sweet and loving.....except for chickens.
I just saw your post so realize this post isn't timely.....If you got the sweetie, maybe being a mix, is enough to keep him from chicken hunting. Good Luck!

Okay, thanks. :) I'm definitely willing to work with him seeing as he has Australian Shepherd in him. Hopefully his farm dog instincts will take over. I never expected to be comfortable Maggie being around chickens/ducks, especially alone seeing as she has duck dog in her and Lab instinct is to hunt birds. Maybe this guy will surprise me too. He's young enough that he should be pliable and able to be taught. I'm calling them at 10 (when they open) I'm really excited! :) I hope he works out.

You know if you are getting him from the shelter he may be something else, i have noticed that they look at a dog and make a guess as to what they are, i have seen border collies they have listed as aussie dogs, everything with a big head is a bull dog mix not pitt mix, if it is black it is a lab , just saying that it may be something entirely different than what they have posted.

Good luck and post a photo if you get it.

So I got a call back from his foster "mom". He is available and seems to be exactly what we are looking for!

He's calm, playful, obedient. It turns out the posting is old and he's actually 1 year and 8 months old. That's fine with me as long as he plays with Maggie. Truth be told I actually prefer it. If I get him I won't have to deal with the annoying puppy habits! She said he plays with her German Shepherd, and her mom's Dachshund all the time. The only problem is, they are going to be out of town for a week, so I have to wait until at least next weekend to meet him. :( *sigh* We will survive.

I answered an ad for a hen a couple of months ago, and that lady had Great Pyrenees guarding her chickens, ducks, turkeys, cows, etc, etc. There must have been 5 adults and numerous pups....therefore I know they are real good with birds of all types. They (GP) have such a loving nature, and since they are guardians, if you put them in with those needing protection as a pup, they imprint with them and will always guard them. Very cool dogs.
You're new pup looks wonderful. It's hard to tell from pictures, but he doesn't look real large. He has beautiful eyes.
I wish you the best of luck!

I had looked into Great Pyrenees. My friend'd GP actually just had puppies (GP/lab mix) and was willing to give me one for free. I just really want to avoid the puppy stage. Really. Really. Maggie will still have puppy tendencies for another year. That's good enough for me. I love puppies. They are adorable and sweet. They also chew on everything expensive, poop on everything that's not washable, not to mention you have to train them from scratch. @_@ Nope. Not again. Not for a while, anyways.
He isn't very big. she said about 35-40 pounds so about the same size as Maggie, which is perfect. I'm really excited to meet him. If he can handle the chickens well I think he'll be perfect for us.
