Is it a good idea to have a guard dog?

Have you considered a donkey? I have heard they will stomp coyotes....

I have had GSD that were city raised before we built our little farm. There was oopsies along the way for 2 of them but the rest did fine with guidence. Like GSD for an all purpose ability breed. I considered getting a donkey but they can be aggressive towards farm animals. I did get 3 male llamas left intact, with no females in the herd the males bonded together and were a great team pasture defenders, never bothering the other animals. I got into the LGDs and love them for how they sincerly bond with the other animals.
