Neighbor dog killed a pullet

So there’s no animal control out here. It’s a rural area of the county and there is no leash laws or anything. There’s a “nuisance animal” law, and I’m not above mentioning that to someone with an aggressive dog, but I’m not someone who would actually shoot an animal. Plus, the dogs are not nasty, just poor bored hyper dogs with nothing to do all day than bark at bugs and each other.

The coop and enclosed run is dog-proof, but the 4’ fenced run is not. The fenced run is what a few of them escape from, but they stay nearby. I have plans to run some kind of lines over the fenced area for hawks this spring, but didn’t think about the added benefit of keeping the chickens IN. Going to be a while before I can tackle that though, so thought if I can figure out how to clip the wings of the 2 that get out, at least I’d know they’d be safer. My dog (when she’s awake) is good about telling me if something is up - she threw a fit today to tell me the dog was out there. But she’s also a big baby and intimidated by those dogs.
I'd take a 2nd look at my own fence if my hen was found mangled in my own yard(or pasture) . Cutting their wing feathers limits how far they can fly and by adding a strand of electric fence you can make your chickens safer

Update - I notified my neighbor and she seemed… disinterested. Didn’t ask any questions, didn’t apologize. It was odd to say the least. And her dogs have been on our property every day since then, just not the main trouble-maker. I have a feeling this conflict is not over.

I’ve since expanded the fence so that it at least encompasses the area they are always flying over the fence to get to, clipped the 2 pullets wings, and setup a security camera watching the area which will notify me if a hen goes outside the fence OR if a dog comes into view. We had a few warm days last week and I let them into the fenced area and didn’t have any trouble.

All temporary until things dry out and I can add netting or something stronger. I know it will help with hawks too, but I’m pretty irritated having to do this to protect them from these trespassers!

It's the disinterested owner that is so frustrating! Hope these changes prevent further conflict!

We caught our neighbors dogs and took them home but when that didn't work we built them a fence. Eventually we had to buy them all collars, kennels and dog houses so we could pen them up here.Their owners abandoned the dogs a year later and moved away

this is prob a crazy idea- could you 'train' the dogs? Being that they aren't mean, seem to be attracted to your area for stimulation- would it be possible to call them over, establish a connection, and begin training them with the firm 'NO!'s' and sit, stay, etc.? They aren't getting trained by their owner, but maybe could be an asset to you in the end? This way they will know how to behave on your property, since they seem to think it an extention of their own- maybe they wil start protecting it properly- with your kids, chickens and dog as part of their pack... haha!?

asked her not too long ago to check the batteries after one of them chased my daughter and her friend in our front yard.
Give them one written warning/notice, that if their dogs come onto your property again that animal control will be notified. And if it happens again, they will be burying their dogs.

I know that seems harsh, but sometimes lazy irresponsible dog owners need a reminder.

Dog bites are not a laughing matter
