Advisory for anyone thinking of using Blu kote, I would not suggest it, it doesn't say on the bottle but it can cause MANY health issues if ingested. One of our hens was doing fine, we decided to use Blu kote on her wound just to help it out a bit. It irritated her skin and before we could catch it she ingested Blu kote, it poisoned her, she's dead now. Blu kotes main Ingredient is cancerous causing, Blu kote is not for use on chickens. If you have any Blu kote stories please leave them here. There are many alternatives to Blu kote, if a chicken is injured to where they are bleeding and you think you need to use blue coat, that's when you isolate them, clean the wound and use something to cover it up, although if it's a wound like that, just keep the bird isolated and give it care.

What was the wound?
Don't think Blukote could kill that quickly.
Tho you're correct in that gentian violet can be toxic.
...and Blukote is not the best for wounds because it camouflages the wound making it hard to monitor it.

It was a healing wound on her butt, it had a scap and the hens pecked at it. We put Blu kote on it and she perked at it vigorously and we caught it to late, it poisoned her and she did not die in a pleasant way at all.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Not sure if BluKote would have caused death. Could have been infection from the Flystrike and in your other thread, she had not been pooping, so she had something else going on.

Often Flystrike is due to an underlying condition. Depending on the severity of the infection from the maggots, some hens don't make it even if they seem to be healing.

I have a chicken I used blu on her neck. I didn’t know it was toxic. Until recent. I’ve been hatching her eggs and getting chicks. Is there a way to test if the toxic chemicals are in her system? Do they pass through or do I need to cull her and her babies
