Hello everyone. I am new to the chicken work and my wife and I bought some on a whim yesterday for my birthday (today). We had discussed it and I have a 50 acre farm just east of where we live on the edge of the small town we live in here in Texas.

Anyways these were sold to use as Sapphire Gems from a farm store called Gebos, small chain in this area. I learned they purchase them from Hoovers I learned this morning when I went in to try to verify if they were indeed Sapphire Gems like they say. I also learned they have no idea, they just label and sale them however they are sold to them from Hoovers. After researching I feel pretty confident they are are not Sapphire Gems, but they look, to me, like they could be about 10 or so other breeds..lol So I would love some help!

Thanks!
Tanner

Those are definitely not sapphire gems. There are several breeds that have the chipmunk look. Will have to wait till they feather out.

The chipmunk stripe, I found out, is a very common chick pattern from pure breed Brown Leghorns to mixed breeds such as Easter Eggers. You may have a nail biting time getting any definitive answers. They sure are cute though.

Looks like Crele Old English.

Some of the breeds that start that way:

Brown leghorn
Welsummer
Speckled sussex
Silver Phoenix (has blue legs)
Black breasted Red Game fowl
Silver Dorkings
Partridge Plymouth Rocks

wait and see being the best method for what they are. Many Easter Eggers (of assorted names) have beards and muffs (fat cheeks at this age). Not all of those have them. Other clues: Dorkings, for example, have 5 toes and short legs. For what it's worth, if any start popping BLACK breast feathers (around 2.5-3.5 weeks) while the wings are some sort of brown tone, it's a roo.

Ultimately, you might have to wait for eggs to truly determine what they are. The list of what they're NOT might be easier to start with.

If no feathered feet, then no Cochins, Brahmas, Faverolles, French Marans. None appear to have crest, so all the crested breeds are out. If they pop a crest later, it won't be a full crest so Legbar would then be likely. None are black skinned so not Silkie or Ayam Cemani.

The 5 toes would eliminate Dorking, Silkie, Faverolle, Houdan (also because of crest), and Crevocouer (not spelled right). If 1 foot has an extra toe and the other doesn't, then EE derived from 1 of the 5-toed breeds is likely.

Black breeds like Austalorp and Jersey Giant are out as are any Barred/Cuckoo (those have a light spot on heads as chicks). Any Colombian marked breed is also out, as are laced markings (most of the wyandottes). White breeds like white leghorns are also out.

The light chipmunk birds may feather out in some sort of buff tones, but there are a few breeds that start like that and come out dark ish red. A cream legbar roo is also a light chipmunk, but has that light head spot that barred/cuckoo birds have. (The hen is the dark chipmunk with a tiny little light dot on the top of the head). Now, if they're EE with a legbar crossed into them, the sexability by down color doesn't work.

Thanks to everyone so far. I have seen myself after looking this might be just a waiting game. We still love the little chicks. They are staying nice and warm tonight as we have had some unusual cold/snowy April weather today here.

Thanks again!
