Breeding Aseels

I have a pair. Bullstag about 11 months old is pure Rampuri while hen is 3 years old about 7/8's Rampuri and 1/8 Gowdy Jap. Hen is in lay and produced 5 eggs in the last week. They have been together for a week. Only eggs collected after today will be hatched. She was transferred directly from another group that included a cock so I want only my stag fathering the chicks. So far it appears the stag does not mate with her a lot. Thus far I have not seen him cover her even once. Is that typical?

Looks like we going to start incubating first eggs using an incubator. Later eggs we will allow hen to brood. Can I keep stag in with hen once she commences incubation?

Depends on the stag in my experience. I think sitting hens do best alone with some privacy. It will probably be ok( I’ve got very limited experience with the aseels or japs) but you run the risk of an excited stag breaking the hen up and losing your eggs.
If I had the pens I’d separate them when she gets sitting or even acting really broody

I have enough pens to split. He is a dead head compared to American Games and with most of those I can leave cock in with broody even though usually not done.

Thus far the stag has been really calm. Still not seen him cover her.

We have about a dozen Aseel eggs split between three batches in incubators. First will be hatching in about a week. They are commingled with American Dominiques and American Games. Collection will stop once I get about a dozen chicks hatched.

How do they compare to American Games in terms of husbandry? The first 12 or so will be brooder reared as parts of groups with 16 to 24 chicks per group. Chicks after that will be hen-hatched and hen-reared by the Aseel hen. I do not know what to expect with those either.

For me Aseel chicks are very aggressive to the point they will peck/fight each other to death, that’s why I will recommend anyone who is raising Aseel chicks to have a extra brooder on hand to separate the chicks which are being bulled from the aggressive chicks

I can rig up 4 brooders quickly, running only two now. Another option I use for American Games is to place a cock or stag in with chicks to suppress. My American Games also go battle mode with leathal effects not watched. Older male moderates the problem well with them. I have had to employ approach with chicks as young as three weeks, but usually it starts at about 5 weeks.

In my area the standard for pure Aseel for example rampuri is for them to have tails which are downwards or straight not upwards. I can see that your hens tail is facing upward, in your area is there a different standard?
