BYC Valentine's Day Hatch-a-Long

Should I initially get the humidity at 40% to start? I plan to weigh the eggs to check for weight loss per the incubating thread. Then I can adjust from there based on weight loss. Just wondering if 40% is a good place to start.
That sounds good! I keep it 40-50% until lockdown. This incubator is more accurate so I'm sticking close to 40%. Then up to 70% for lockdown. As they start pipping, that'll drive it up so I keep the closest eye on them then.

Thanks. A new hygrometer just arrived so I can test it against my incubator's reading. It's super dry here. We haven't had rain for 154 days straight!
It's incredibly humid here most of the time, like right now, 70%, and it's 14F. I've lived in Wisconsin for decades and never understood why we're so humid, especially in the winter when it's so cold.

That humidity makes your cold temps feel even colder 🥶

The hygrometer on my new incubator is reading 42% but 2 of the 3 separate ones in the incubator are reading 35% (the third is reading 32%). Would you recommend I up the humidity before setting my eggs?

The hygrometer sitting in the house is reading 14% 😳

You could salt test those to see how accurate they are. You put salt in something small, like the plastic cap of a soda bottle, then add water so it's wet. Put that cap and your hygrometer into a zip lock bag and leave it for at least 8 hours, maybe longer may be needed. It should read 75%.

If you don't want to wait to do that, I'd go with your 35% and 32% ones, and raise your incubator up to around 45/50%.

I just set my eggs!!
I weighed each one. They range from 64 - 81 grams each.
I ought to try that once out of curiosity, but never have. It'll be interesting having you track yours! Do you candle/weigh daily or just 7, 14, (or something like that) and lockdown? I usually do 6 or 7 days, then not again until lockdown unless I have questionable ones that should be rechecked.

That's a good question ;)
This is my first time. I think I'll check after 3 days and again at 7 days. My eggs are brown so I doubt candling will work. I'll weigh them for sure.

Do you candle just before or even during lockdown?
