Calico Cochin Thread

Calico is a "nickname" given by some in the US for incorrectly marked/colored mille fleur cochins (I have calicos so understand the love of the coloring). Mille Fleur should have white at the tips of the feathers to create the "mille fleur" pattern (see mille fleur d'uccles for a good representation). The roo above that you were told was a calico looks to be a mille fleur without good marked feather tips and as a chick he might have presented with white (they darken as they mature) which a breeder of mille fleur wouldn't want in his background hence selling him as a calico. If so breeding him to a calico hen that has "alot" of white would be a good mix to bring the red back in.

Would love any feedback on this little guy...

His buff and black have been slow to come in but little by little his pattern is changing. He is 11 weeks in this photo. Is it normal for the "Calicos" to start with a white base and gradually show the pattern develop. I hatched this chick in the incubator and I don't have any experience with this color variety.
The mille fleur coloring (which calico is) darkens as they get older and when they molt the first time will also change. He is just very diluted in color.

some of mine I unfortunately have been required by wife to sell or trade for more productive birds.

This appears to be an old thread but I've learned a lot from you all! I have some Mille/Calico eggs coming at the beginning of February. I am hoping for some great colors!

With so many people on Facebook nowadays, byc has less activity.
I pop in every other day but on Facebook constantly. All kinds of chicken groups of every breed and colors
:)

I have been looking around recently and think my rooster is a calico too. I bought him because I thought he was pretty. I figured everyone had buff and since I just have them with my peafowl and don't show them I might as well breed for pretty. What do you think?

I think the younger rooster/cockerel is a dilute calico, his black is blue. Opinions?
