Can a chick create an external pip but membrane remain intact?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question...but I’m kinda flipping out, lol. My first time using an incubator and hatching eggs..they're maran eggs and super dark. One of my eggs seems to have pipped but where the shell has fallen off looks completely white and papery underneath. Is there a way chicks can bust part of the shell off but maybe the inner membrane didn’t break/rip. The membrane looks solid and I’m worried 😥. The chick also pipped in middle to lower part of the egg...

I'm pretty sure I see a tear in the membrane. It doesn't have to be big. I've read that the force required to break out of the shell will always break through it. My first hand experience backs this up.

Wrong end pipping is not uncommon. They usually hatch on their own just fine. They can take a bit longer from pip to zip because the chick was intending to internally not externally pip. Does that make sense?

What gorgeous eggs! Would you mind sharing who the breeder is?

I got the eggs from Thornfield poultry. They are soooo dark and arrived in perfect condition. On the flip side of that I bought 2 candlers and a high powered flashlight and was unable to candle them... so I am literally going into this blind lol. It’s very nerve wracking not knowing what’s going on in those shells. But I monitored weight loss and smelled them and checked for oozing... so hopefully we’re all good. I purchased 6 eggs and kept all 6 for lockdown. Only one egg has pipped so far and it is actually my darkest egg but had the least amount of weight loss...Tomorrow is day 21...hoping for the best! I attached a pic of the eggs after I unpackaged them from delivery.

They're lovely eggs and I have a soft spot for BCM. I'll have to look them up.

I'm excited to see what hatches for you. Please keep posting updates!

Oh and I forgot to say there was a tear... It’s a little bigger today, but she hasn’t progressed anymore since then. I set them on March 21st at 11:00am. None of the others have pipped yet. They are in a brand new Brinsea Mini Advanced and I know my temps have been perfect. I did struggle with humidity though. It has been really humid/rainy in Oregon the past 3 weeks. Even with no water in incubator I struggled to get my humidity down. I had to add rice to incubator and I weighed eggs periodically to help in adjusting my humidity.

So I know that since her pip was probably meant to be an internal pip and not external, it will take her longer. She is still chirping but absolutely nothing out of the other eggs...
