I just finished cutting a bunch of nesting things for the ducks and after thinking about it, I had planned on lining them up along the fence-line BUT, they're all blue & white..i dont want my girls to get confused when going back to their nests...maybe i should paint them?

so can ducks see colors?

Yes they can.

My ducks are so used to seeing me in Blue as that is the colour of my work uniforms, that I wear it on weekends too... They are a bit scared of me if I wear bright colours such as yellow, And seem not to recognise me at all if I wear red.

after many years of hunting them I would have to say yes.
The colors they see best are Budwiser and Cinnamon schnapps

Yes, one of the things that is fascinating about birds is that they see more color than humans. I think actually they see a wider color spectrum than humans, so we probably cannot even imagine what they see. I have always wanted to learn more about their vision if anyone knows of any good articles on it. It is something that has been mentioned in passing in some of my classes in school, but never talked about in any sort of detail. Does anyone know if this applies to all birds? Can some see more colors than others?

I am convinced today that they can see in colours. I have been giving leafy treats to my ducklings and they come towards me when I have greens in my hand. But today I had a red juicy strawberry that they have never seen before and they didn't even want to come near me. And the moment i switch to green they came straight away. Go figure...

My chickens hate it when i wear my orange sweater too.

my duck ming mei loves the color red.... she has to wear shoes every day due to feet problems and always picks out her red shoes... I also paint her nails from time to time and i hold the bottles of colors in front of her and she always pecks red or purple. when i'd take her for walks in my old apartment complex, she'd walk to each red car, stop, admire it, and then walk to the next red car and repeat the process. lol

Birds can also see in the ultraviolet range. Humans have cells that can detect red, green, and blue. Birds also have cells that detect ultraviolet.
On top of that, different species have special adaptations in their eyes that lets them discern between different colors that are very similar. Basically two colors that might look identical to a human may look different to a bird.

Wikipedia is a good starting point for learning more about this topic. Here's the main article for bird vision:

You'd think with their excellent vision that birds in generally would be able to tell that the lump on the ground is their own poop before they taste it and spit it out....

OMG, you are too funny.

They must *like* their poo. They seem to like swimming in it, that's for sure.

Thank you for the info on the color seeing thing. It is fascinating really. How can we even imagine what they see if we have never seen it? (rhetorical question) It is really something to think about.
