Can I store feed in a plastic garbage can?

I've been using trash cans for years. I bought a bunch at Walmart for 10 dollars. Then the price shot up.

I keep my feed out by the coop, outside, so I opted for metal trashcans - even though we dont HAVE a mice/rodent problem ya never know when they might sneak up on ya

If ya get the kind with the handle that is poked through the lid then ya hafta silicone around it or it will leak. The kind with the riveted-on handle doesn't seem to leak.

Inside we use platic pet food containers, the kind you can find at WalMart or Petco. I like them well-enough, they ARE water tight, but they're not rodent proof. I do keep oyster shell in one outside though, nothing eats that.

Squirrels and mice can chew through the plastic, but I solved the problem with mine. I rub a garlic clove where they usually chew, then sprinkle with cayenne pepper. They leave it alone. (that one is on my deck, not inside)

I have mice in my shed so I store the chicken feed outside by the coop in a 30 gallon plastic trash can. I fit 50#s of layer, 25#s of scratch, 25#s of chick starter and a big bag of BOSS in there.

The good thing about the clear plastic bins is you can see if anything is moving around in there like creepy crawlers or rodents.

Thank you for all the advice. We have two mutts and a mouser cat that keep the rodents down. (I found the cat on Craigslist, the reason he was up for grabs was because he ate the hamster

) I have homemade organic fertilizer stored in a plastic bin in one of the outbuildings, and nothing has chewed through it, but the dogs love to dig it up once I get it spread into the garden! So, I'll head back to the depot and get the plastic can. Galvanized is much classier, but ya gotta do what you gotta do.

I do not dump the feed into the can ~ I sit the full bag of feed into the can and completely empty it before putting the next bag in. That way I know that the feed is fresh and I don't have "old feed" getting nasty in the bottom of the can. If you dump the feed into the can you should make just make sure to completely empty the can before adding a new bag. I do the same with my dog and cat food too.

I have been dumping the bag into one of those rubbermaid tubs. It sits outside near the coop. Now I am concerned. Might need to move it to a galvanized can. I don;t have a rodent problenm and certainly don't want one!
