Central Florida Hatch-A-Holics Poultry Swap Feb 12, 2011 Ocala

It varies a lot by the breed. The faster feathering breeds can usually be sexed by the tail feathers at less than a week. The girls will get the tail feathers first. On some breeds you can feather sex them from the wing feathers. Other breeds, depending on age, the cockerals will get their combs in real early. There are many different ways to tell sex on birds but some breeds are just very difficult until almost mature. Will depend greatly on the breed that you select. And sexing is never guaranteed 100% not even with the professional sexers at the hatcheries. Most breeders can usually tell on the breed that they are most familiar with.

You've been feeding them, haven't you? Tribbles always reproduce if you feed them...

They're especially fond of Triticale aren't they? My silkies are a LOT like tribbles. They even make that funny little 'purring' sound sometimes. I wonder if Roddenberry ever saw a silkie chicken before he wrote the story?

By the way, thanks for the info on the turkey poults. I cleared out my in box, I didn't know it was full. I gave my friends the info and they were very grateful for it. They're still deciding what to do (they don't really want to order from a hatchery if there's another way), and I'm still looking for someone who will have Royal Palm turkeys in the spring somewhere close to Jacksonville, FL.

Nava has some Royal Palm turkeys. I don't know if his birds are laying yet, but if they're really set on RPs he might have some poults in the spring. Couldn't hurt to ask him.

I would NEVER feed triticale to a Silkie. They're terrible carriers of Gritsar Syndrome and the triticale might cause it to spread to every bird in the area!

You had better bring them! How much do you usually ask for the chicks?
