I have a 5 month old black diamond hen. She would never let me pick her up and would always run from me. However, she just started to lay. Since, she has finally let me bond with her. Will let me pick her up and love on her. I’m curious, do most hens mellow out after they start laying?

She hasn't mellowed out. Assuming you don't have a rooster your hen thinks you are mating her and this will make her eggs fertile.

I don’t have any roosters. I’m confused- how is it possible for a human to fertilize a hens eggs?

They can’t, but your pullet doesn’t know that. She knows that you feed and protect her, like a rooster. And if she squats for you hen you probably pet/scratch her, which is similar to the interaction from a rooster.

Her personality may also have changed some from the hormones associated with starting to lay eggs. So it is probably a combination of the two.

lol, it’s how you worded your first reply. Just wanted to make sure there was something I didn’t know. 😂
