Chicken Breed Focus - Dutch Bantam

Thank you Égalité and chickenlover21 for this informative contribution. Here you see the other, lavender mother I have with two black (not pure black) chicks. The rooster (father) was pyle. My Dutch are really lovely and very curious birds. They are easy to handle but a little flightly. They can fly a little and are great as free rangers. When they are outside the run for over two hours they get curious and go too far away in the neighborhood. When kept in a run they need a high or covered fence. This year I had chicks from natural breed. I really enjoyed this. In six months time these two black chicks and one pyle from the flock above grew up to beautiful hens and became good layers. These two chicks even tried to hatch infertile eggs a few days ago. But it's never a problem tot stop my Dutch from broodiness. Just take all the eggs away and put them on the sleeping stick at night. The next day the broodiness has passed. One of the black chicks who grew up to a beautiful pullet (here about 5 months) and a pyle hen or pullet (I'm not sure, mother and daughter look alike).

I had a Dutch Bantam hen that I bought at TSC. I picked her because she was so small and cute. I named her Peewee, and she was the fussiest and most feisty little pulley. You could always count on her making more noise than any of the others. Sadly, she died when she was a few months from an unknown cause. I really enjoyed her character and spunk. I got two more chicks, one is a pulley and the other is a cockerel, Polly and Penrey. They are both tiny and beautiful, and I hope they will have chicks one day.

Such beautiful colors on your little cockerel! Sorry about Peewee.

Do you help others to have the breed? I have only one hen, but come spring I would be able to have a seperate coup for her is she had a mate or chicks. I do love this breed! The Roo's are amazingly beautiful

My wife and I found a hen roaming around town at my grandmas, so we adopted her. We named her baby and now she lives with buff Orpingtons. She thinks she is just as big as they are
