Chicken pooped an egg yolk, and mucussy (egg white?) poops.

So on Thursday my pet chicken layed her first egg of the year. Usually she lays every 2 days or so, and on Saturday she acted like she wanted to lay another and so was hiding out in her nest.

But she didn't lay anything, and I found some mucussy poop (that I'm now thinking could have been an egg white?). And now today she pooped out some egg yolk.

Now I'm realizing she hasn't been eating much. Im calling a vet asap, but from what I'm finding it seems like it like it's probably EYP? Does that sound right, or could it be something else? And what does it mean that she successfully layed an egg just a few days ago, does that at least mean that whatever this is it's very recent?

None of us can diagnose your hen. But my guess it's egg binding, not EYP. Sometimes an egg without a shell gets stuck and sometimes it breaks inside. The yolk and albumen are clues. She will require an antibiotic for the bacterial infection that is probably already growing from the broken yolk.

Taking her to the vet is a good idea. Meanwhile you want her to have strong contractions to push out all the remaining egg. Give her calcium citrate if you can get it. She needs at least 330mg right now. Give the tablet directly into her beak and place her in a comfortable place with water to drink.

Thank you for the reply! Im going to call the vet she goes to in the morning. It's dark right now so she's sleeping, can you tell me if it makes sense to give her the calcium citrate right now? Maybe by syringe feeding?

I would give her the calcium if possible. Tums may be given until you get calcium citrate.

I found some at Walmart and was able to feed it to her pretty easily by crumbling it and washing it down with some water.

Okay, yes, that matches up with what I've just been reading, I will do that.

Do you think it makes sense to try to buy antibiotics to give her myself (I think my tractor supply sells them)? Especially if I can't get her seen short notice?

How is she acting?

If she was having problems expelling an egg then you want to give her Calcium.

Antibiotics would be helpful if she has an infection, but I don't see anything mentioned in your posts to conclude that's what is going on.

She hasn't been acting too distressed or unhealthy. It's what azygous said about an infection becoming likely that I'm worried about.
