Chicken Pox

Both of my chickens have chicken pox. One barely has any warts/bumps on it's comb or eye area. The other has such bad pox that she can no longer see out of either eye. Due to the lack of eye sight, this morning she is no longer eating or drinking. We all know what that means.

Is there anything I can do to help relieve the pain or swelling in her eye area? I thought about Neosporin... is it safe for chickens?

Your one chickens has wet fowl pox and it can be fatal. Look inside the chicken's beak to see if there are any yellow or gar patches that should not be there. Those lesions may cut off the air supply. Since it is a virus, there is no real cure, but some use antibiotics for any secondary bacterial infections. Casportpony here on BYC has been treating several of her birds with Baytril injections. Pictures can be of help to us. Here are two links for information:

I've had to tube feed several that had the scabs on their eyes, so that is an option. FWIW, just about to start my tubing rounds now, I think I have ten to do, lol.

You can pull the scabs off the eyes and then very carefully apply iodine tincture to the sores, that should allow her to see enough to eat. If there is pus in the eye, that needs to come out or she will probably lose the eye to infection.

Thank you for the links. They were very helpful. She definitely looks as bad off as the chicken that can no longer see. Heartbreaking. I ran to the store and bought her baby food, which she ate some of, and the iodine. I got her to drink a bit of water too.
