My silver laced wyandotte was attacked a week ago. Poor hen only has one tail feather left. I can see the egg she is trying to push out, it protrudes and she makes a loud hissing sound. I have cleaned her and tried to loosen her where the egg is trying to come out and it is hard and not flexible. She is also having poop collect on her lower tail feathers. Can anyone give me some advice?

A stuck egg needs for the hen to be very hydrated, so first thing is to get some water into her. Then you need to give her a calcium supplement. (calcium citrate or calcium gluconate) This will help her with the muscle contractions necessary to push out the egg. Moisten her vent tissue with coconut oil or mineral oil or castor oil.

This could take up to forty-eight hours, but usually it comes out in just a few hours after you do the above tips.

Set up a crate for her in a quiet place with dim light and no distractions. Place a heating pad in the crate set on the lowest heat. Last, lay a dampened towel over the pad and install your hen. The moist heat will help her relax and to help soften her vent tissue so the egg slips out easier.

Was her vent area damaged when she was attacked? How old is she, and has she been a regular layer recently? She might be helped with a warm soak in water up to her wings, unless she is very weak. If she is weak, try the heating pad as Azygous recommended. Does the egg look lime a normal egg or possibly a lash egg? Give her the calcium that was recommended, and get her drinking water. Lubricate her vent well. I hope she lays it soon.
