first time raising chicks and honestly petrified i have done something to hurt my babies! it’s been a week and what was supposed to be a dozen sweet chickies is now half a dozen!

day old chicks were shipped while it was fairly cold, spent 3 days in the mail.

two were DOA, two looked extremely weak. the others all looked good.

the two weak chicks were given electrolytes and honey in water, syringed directly to them. they passed a day apart.

three days go by and everything seems okay, 7 babies happy and eating and drinking and hopping around their brooder.

this morning found one chick dead, came home a few hours later to find another chick with drooped wings, closed eyes, looking sad. gave her electrolytes and honey but now i’m petrified all these chicks are going to die! please, can anyone help?

4 foot by 2 foot brooder is inside. ambient temp is 76 and brooder plate is set to 90. they have fresh water changed daily. medicated starter crumbles. bedded on standard pine shavings. they should all be nearing a week old today.

I'm sorry for your losses.

Can you post photos of the chicks, their poop and the brooder?

Cute chicks!

I don't see anything alarming right off the bat. The poop looks normal to me and all the chicks look alert.
Your brooder has plenty of ventilation and room.

Are the chicks using the brooder plate? It may need to be raised up a little bit so they can more easily go under it.

Your room temp is 76 which is plenty warm for them to be running about inside the cage.

Are they all doing o.k. now? I'm not sure why the others didn't make it. Could have been due to shipping stress, which unfortunately seems to be common.

good to hear that everything looks okay to seasoned eyes. the remaining 5 seem to be okay now. i did raise the brooder plate this morning.

I am not saying this is the cause, but honey can harbor bacteria. I would not give it internally to delicate/ill beings. It is strange, because honey can have antibacterial properties when used externally. Again, I am not saying that this was the cause, but it is something to be aware of.

Are you sure they were not ingesting some of their bedding? It's probably not it but just something to keep in mind
