It gets worn down over time and yes eventually passes through as tiny particles.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that a Turkey's gizzard could crush a metal pipe. But in any case, they use the gravel as "teeth" and it gets worn down and passed out when its too small to be stopped from getting "swallowed."

RE Road Gravel...If you stick your shovel into a gravel driveway, and spread the contents out on a table and look close, you'll have particles the size of pennies, and particles so small they're dust, and everything in between. Not sure why it wouldn't contain pieces suitable for chicks.

Quick question about grit, I gave my girls chick grit for the last 4 weeks and have now run out. I am contemplating regular grit now, they are 5 weeks old and will be moving to the outdoors soon. Thank you!
