Closed red, swollen eye

Her other eye is normal. We don't have a vet around here that handles chickens, but even if we did it's too expensive. My husband isn't exactly thrilled that I've already spent about $70 in treatments

That's good her other eye is still okay. Expenses do add up quickly. If possible, the pharmacy may have an over the counter antibiotic eye ointment that could be used.

Update for anyone that cares

Her eye is still all black and swollen like the picture above, but not as lumpy. She scratches it and rubs it on her shoulder a little bit.

My husband and I now also believe she is molting as she has lost several feathers in the last couple weeks. It's a pain because I'm afraid to pick her up to look at the eye because I don't want to hurt her.

She still runs around with the other hens but goes through short periods of time where she'll go somewhere away from them and just stand there (under the back steps, under some bushes, in the chicken tractor). And she hasn't laid an egg since this all started but that's the last thing I'm worried about.

Thank you for the update. I didn't want to ask because I assumed it would be sad for you. It's great she's still with you!

Hopefully it will just heal on its own. I hope someone will post an opinion on her eye condition. It's definitely scary looking and I'm so glad it hasn't gotten worse. Please keep us updated.

She is doing the same. It's stressful. I just wish she would get better, I wish she'd get her eyesight back.
We think she laid an egg today, which would be the first one since this whole thing started.
We're not sure if it was her or our golden laced wyandotte, who is also molting and hasn't laid an egg in about a week. But the wyandotte usually lays deformed eggs so who knows...

Thank you for asking

This is from today. It was the best I could do since this was the first time in a few days my girls were let out of the coop (it's too cold for me!) and didn't want to stand still.

She's such a pretty girl! From the front, I think I see the top of the bottom eyelid. It looks like an improvement. Is it still completely black like in the earlier pictures? I'm really hoping someone on BYC will know what is happening to her. Your grass looks nice and green!
