Cockerel with beak open wide

My cockerel nipped and pinched at my knuckle today a couple times so I picked him up and held him till he calmed down. Then I put him back with the pullets and his mouth was wide open and stayed that way for a couple minutes. Do you think he was in distress, embarrassed or what?

I think he was embarrassed - kind of like "Oh NO, I can't believe that just happened to ME!!!"

I've seen some of mine with their mouths open under similar circumstances that I could imagine people with their mouths open. As in... "...WHAT?!?!?"
