Update!!! BCM chick no change. SDL comb is redder and started his little squeaky toy crow this morning with flapping of wings!! Lol. He sounds pitiful. Now I have to find him a home. No hurry though. He’s so handsome.

Updated pics of the BCM. About 9-10 weeks old. The Silver Deathlayer found a new home today. He has been crowing for a week.

x2! Honestly I would have figured that with all that comb and wattles at such a young age would mean a definite male at this age, but it is proving me wrong haha! I would update again when the chick is around 11-13 weeks old as thats when male specific feathering comes in.

BCM is a cockerel, pullets dont start getting their combs and wattles in or red until they are close to laying. BCM are a bit slower of a maturing breed.

I would agree with this based on my experience with the breed too. I haven’t seen wattles on any of my marans until much older. Only one of my marans has copper on her neck yet and they are 15-20 weeks old. I did have one marans roo and he had red wattles very early and started getting copper colouring much earlier.

Thank you for documenting your BCM with photos! We just got our first flock and have 1 4 week old BCM that is amazing with my daughter so I’m really hoping for a pullet. Im assuming you have a lady on your hands and will be getting eggs in the coming weeks?!?
