I live in south Texas and as we know... its pretty hot. What cooling systems do y'all have for your outdoor rabbits? My first thought was a misting system. Do rabbits like that and does it seem like a waste of water? What about solar powered fans?

An ariel view of my cages. Its underneath enough shade that its not in direct sunlight ever. If I used solar powered fans, I would have to have a wire going to the panels somewhere else.

Hi DrakeMom, I live in Germany, Europe and in my region it gets up to 102°F and often it gets very humid. I know in Texas it gets hotter. We used to have small rabbit breeds and giants (German giant). They lived outdoors (stables combined with runs/free range areas). There were a lot of shady areas with some stone slabs on the ground and on hot days they stretched themselves out on them to cool their bellys. They digged in the earth till there were cool parts of fresh earth, then they stretched out there. One summer some small rabbits had to stay in their stables for some reason, and I put cool packs out of the freezer wrapped in towels in their stable. They snuggled against those cold pieces to cool down. I had to renew those cool packs often. Sometimes we had to bring the German giants inside in the cool basement when it got too hot for them outside (they belong to the more heat sensitive breeds). We also had a big white parasol placed over the stables which helped on the really hot days.

You can freeze water bottles and put them out with the rabbits, they'll lay against them if they get hot but you might have to change them out semi-often.

We’re in a major heat wave right now, supposed to get in the 100s everyday for the next few days. I’m doing all I can to cool my rabbits down. You can use ceramic tiles, frozen water bottles, a snake mister to gently mist them, or fans to give them constant air. I have a fan on high right now right up to the cage of one of my expecting does to help her cool down. Also make sure to provide nice cold water as it will help encourage them to drink and stay hydrated. Another good thing you can do is provide them with some watermelon as a little snack since it contains a lot of water. It helps them stay hydrated. I also like to go out and pour water on them myself. But today I’m going to bring them in today because it could possibly get up to 120 degrees today. UNBEARABLE. This is why I hate summer.
