Coop Design/Cost Question

Hi,

This is my first time designing a coop, and I have a couple questions. I've been desiging the coop in FreeCAD so I can estimate the costs. The overall size 5'x5' with 5' on the high side and 3' on the low side. I was planning on incorporating the deep litter method into the design. This does not include the legs the coop sits on. After trying to price this all out, it appears that this will cost approx. $1k which seems a bit steep and doesn't even include the trim yet. I was wondering if there's things I can do to reduce the pricing without shrinking. I had finished and apparently forgot to save the file and my computer crashed, so the attached zipped FreeCAD file is quite a bit off from the final design (which the estimates are based off of). Any help would be appreciated.

sounds kinda high for a 5x5 coop. I don't recall how much mine was but I'm sure it was under 1k. 6x12 coop.

I know that " in the time of the virus" getting stuff can be tricky...

But I built a $8 coop and an almost free coop (had to buy a few screws).

I managed by scrounging.

Someone gave me a free truck topper, and I used that for the roof. I searched through the construction trash area of our local dump and got plywood, some 2x2s and they had nice screws in them too. I got free fencing from someone that posted on our local "free stuff" Facebook page.

Anyway..... I scrounged.

After accumulating bunches of junk, I laid it all out, eyeballed it and decided what I could turn it into.... and then I did.

Even scrounged junk, if you paint it, can look cute.

Oh, so those 2 coops are.... uh...

The bantam coop used the truck topper, and is a foot shorter than the truck topper, but is the same width...whatever that is.

The duck coop is... uh.... 4x8 maybe???

That seems steep. There are a lot of things you have chosen that either don't make much sense, or just aren't necessary for what you are building.

Stainless Steel nails are overkill - galvanized would be fine. You also definitely don't need 10lbs of them - 5lbs is probably more than you need.

What are you using the pocket hole screws for? Regular exterior screws are a lot cheaper (and ironically, if you did need pocket screws, buying the smaller containers of Kreg screws actually costs less per screw - I'll never figure that one out).

You don't need that many roofing screws - a smaller package would be plenty. You're buying enough to do a very large roof (I don't even think we used that many on our entire metal pole barn, FWIW), not a small one.

Thanks for all the responses! In terms of the nails and screws, It's what I found on home depot's website. I was trying to find smaller packs. Their site is pretty clunky and I can't really visit the stores at the moment. I'll see if I can find better. In terms of siding, that is my other big expense. I put a couple options as at 5'x5', getting all the plyboard or whatever ends up being just as expensive. I was doing 5'x5' as we were planning on getting regular sized chickens (maybe 6?). My wife wanted austrolop and amaraucana. I kind of wanted Jersey giants but maybe they are too large. I wasn't planning on a run yet, and we live in the Seattle area, so it rains a lot and will eventually need it.

make your coop/run with standard lumber dimensions...8,12,16..etc. half them when needed. I chose a 6x12x6 coop/run so I bought all 12s and cut some in half..

plywood you can half to 4x4 if you want a small coop/box.

I would suggest a large, basic square/rectangle structure 6ft tall (so you can walk inside). and then build off of that.
