Hello all! New Quail parents here! We have three baby Jumbo Coturnix quail. They are still in a brooder with a heat lamp, but, we are in need of coop ideas! For further information, we live in Central Louisiana, so it does get hot. We absolutely can accommodate….anything to ensure these babies are comfortable and thriving. I did see that a rabbit hutch is a good coop option, but would love to hear the input of the experts. Please share your set-ups or give any advice to keep these babies healthy and happy! Many thanks!

P.s. this is the best picture I could get, they sure are fast moving.

I just moved mine in one of these yesterday. I have 4 and they seem to really like it. They have a room that’s enclosed on all sides minus the doorway and the big open area. I chose this one as it has a pull out tray that catches the droppings but the main reason was, it had a wire floor so I don’t have to relocate them while I clean the tray. Most of them I have seen you do. I took 1/2” hardware cloth and covered the front and the floors as well for extra protection. I will say the main latch on the wire door is not the best so I use two spring clips in addition to the latch to help keep it shut. Here’s a photo from inside the hutch so you can see how it’s setup. I’d say it could hold 5-6 birds comfortably.

That looks pretty nice @Quailwhatdoyaknow

Is the roof flat? What is it made from?
I'm wondering how it would hold up to rain and snow.
The roof is asphalt and has a slight pitch to it. It’s supposed to be able to be in the weather. I’d probably paint it though if it was going to be in direct sunlight. As it comes, the sun would prob eat it up without the paint.

Have you thought about adding a dirt box in there for them like this:
