Please elaborate. Are you asking what you should charge for a dozen or the cost versus benefit of raising chickens? It cost us about 1000 dollars to build our coop, run and purchase our hens. We've had all 8 for 2 years and are at our 250th dozen. They still havent paid it off :he

What do you think you got wrong? It really depends on the person, what type of feed you use, your bedding, etc.

Chickens eat around 1/4 to 1/3 lb of feed per day. Multiply that by how many chickens you have. That's how many pounds of feed you use per day. Divide your bag weight by that number, and you can figure out how many days it takes to go through one bag. Divide the bag cost by the amount of days, and you'll get your daily cost.
(Mine is around $6.00)

Bedding is pretty easy, just figure out how much bedding you use every time you clean the coop, (I use 7 dollars worth of wood shavings) and multiply that by how many times you clean your coop per year. If you want daily, then just divide that by 365.
(This adds up to a very tiny amount for me.)

The general rule of thumb is that you should pay off your supplies (Coop, feeders, heaters, etc.) over a period of 10 years, or 10% per year. I'll Say that's $.30 per day, so add that to the daily cost.

Your chickens probably cost something like $2.00 each as chicks, so you can decide whether to "pay" for them over a long period of time or in one year.

Now figure out how many eggs you get daily and multiply that by whatever you charge per egg, then you'll get your daily gross income. Subtract your daily costs from that, and you'll get your net profit.

For a reference, I make around $2.00 per day off 30 chickens if I don't free range them. :lau

Well first, there are several expenses you need to ignore, or no one would do this hobby.

Second, you need to grossly inflate the entertainment value of the birds.

JK - seriously, in the beginning - dang expensive. Some people do it cheap, some people do it expensive. My first coop was cheap, but after having them for years, I did upgrade and now have two coops - but the old one just is used a couple of times a year.

If you keep an expense sheet, and a profit sheet, and see where you are in the end, it is about the best you can do. I never buy bedding, we live on a ranch, I do buy feed. My coop was a gift from my DH, so not an expense....I know a person that used a junker car for a coop - free. Often times you can find sheds for sale much cheaper than you could build. Fencing can be on craigs list too.

How did you do it?
I made a spread sheet for daily egg count.
My cost cycles are defined by how long a bag of feed lasts.
