Crate chicken coop

I would love to have a crate like that to mess with! Good luck and have fun building! I had used wooden crate boxes that a guy who would tinker with airplanes would leave around, they were long and skinny, but I would use them as brooder pens and use the lids for dividers or porches. the wood was thin and didn't last but a few seasons, but it was fun to play with, and nice to have!

That is still a good size.

To seal it up from predators there are a few options.
First know what predators you may be dealing with. Some people have everything from weasels to snakes and bears.
:th

What part of the country are you in? You said barn so I assume you are not in town.
Pretty much any hole or crack 1/2" or bigger will need hardware cloth or more wood to keep weasels , rats and snakes out.

You will need ventilation no matter where you are. There are really good articles written by some really knowledgeable people here.

Also tons of coop ideas in the coop pages.

I look forward to seeing your progression.

Be sure to post pics and ask questions on anything that gets tricky. There are always people ready to help.

Oh one thing that occurs to me......if you were to lay it down.....the boards that run horizontal would be vertical...... That would make it easy to give it a board and batton look. Here are a couple short videos if you want to see what that looks like while closing gaps.

Ok one video and one page showing what it looks like.

Wishing you happy building!

I sure will put pictures up on the progress, I'm here in Texas. My yard is enclosed with a fence and I have a small dog run enclosed that I plan to use for them but I want to let them roam free when they are old enough. I was planning on deconstructing the box but that's good idea to lay it on the side and create ventilation with the roof. I want to add legs if I do that.

Was trying to find the post. Someone had shown their recycled crate build recently on a thread. If anyone remembers, it was a few pictures, painted blue with a run attached. It was in a thread someone was asking about really inexpensive coop ideas.

Basically they took the wooden crates and broke them down into panels first.

ETA: found it

Yea I was so happy to see this box, there are 2 of them and several pallets. I plan to use the pallets as a deck floor. and when it gets all worn out ill hope to know way more about chickens that ill be able to transition into a sturdier coop.
