Hi everyone!

We took in some ex commercial laying hens almost 2 weeks ago and things have been going well.. they were in some rough shape but they are improving.. but now I’m having another issue..

Tonight while doing our chicken chores one our ladies sounds like she’s very croupy is how I describe it. Like how adults or babies sound congested in their chest and need to take a deep breath and cough.. I think she sounds horrible but she’s eating and drinking and moving just fine..

Is there anything that I can treat her with and treat the entire flock? There’s 10 ladies in this coop and I really don’t want them all to get sick!

Thank you so much in advance!

Does she sound like she is having stridor? Look at the video and listen to the chicken in post 1.

Stridor is a sound made when a small piece of feed or some mucus gets in the airway. Swelling of the airway with a respiratory infection could also be a cause. Most of the time it is temporary and goes away in a few hours after coughing it up. Let us know if that sounds similar.

She does not sound like this.. she sounds like she’s congested like she needs to take a big cough like a human would to clear the lungs if that makes sense

This is not my video but my girl sounds exactly like this chicken does in the video!

That sounds like rales or crackles. It is common with a respiratory disease and mucus in the airways. But check her crop to see if it is full of food and liquid and possibly common back up into her throat and airway. Crop problems can cause the crop to not empty well. Be careful feeling of it since it could make her vomit and choke. Can you post a picture of your own chicken so that we can see her eyes and face and her crop?
