I have a 2 year old bantam hen with an abscess on the side of her neck. I took her to a veterinary school and they were able to aspirate some fluid from her neck and the results came back it had inflamed material and plant material and not likely cancerous. They referred me to have it removed by an avian specialist for removal. I cannot even imagine how much that would end up costing and don’t have the funds for that anyhow. After mulling it over, I’m wondering if this is something someone has removed themself from their hens. It’s about the size of a marble and seems to have mobility. Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the site! Would you be able to post pictures of the abscess as well as any material aspirated and any reports given to you by the school? There are some members here who have seen many things throughout their years and may have some ideas.

Is there a chance this was a wound that got infected and and abscess formed?

Unfortunately there is no wound on the outside to take a picture of. It appears that it’s something she may have ingested and is stuck and her body has started to walk it off. When you feel her neck, you can feel a ball. It’s not attached to anything either so it sort of moves around. I can push it up to her skin. I also didn’t think to get a picture of the liquid taken in the needle. It was a yellow orange color. No blood.
