Last year (in May) we raised 3 Greylag geese from eggs in an abandoned nest. They have been with us since then growing up fit & healthy partly thanks to advice on your website. We live waterside & since being able to fly they have ranged freely on our 10 acre patch only. Last week without warning the two males just disappeared & we haven’t seen them since, which is strange as they always came in to roost near the house & we still fed them daily. Neither had any experience of flying high above the trees & the female is still here.

This year’s wild Greylags moved into our patch a couple of weeks back & they were affecting their confidence as they are a bit bigger & more aggressive. Our alpha goose was also getting aggressive with my wife, so seemed frustrated by the newcomers!

I realise geese leave their parents (us!) at around a year, but is it normal for them to just up and go suddenly and not return at all. I’m concerned something has happened to them (we have checked for signs of an attack, or bodies, but there are none), but feel a fox or otter is unlikely to have taken both in one night.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

I’m pleased to say the geese returned 10 days later, one has a small injury & the other is more humble & hungry, but they both seem ok.
They aren’t mixing with the wild geese, so their disappearance is still something of a mystery, but at least they are back…. destroyiing everything in pecking range… be careful what you wish for:rolleyes:
