DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

This isn't really an invention, and certainly not on a par w/ some of you guys stuff, but thought I'd share it anyway.

I prefer it if we have broody moms to do the work, but that isn't always doable. We bought these cheap feather dusters and tied them together and hung them in the brooder. The chicks LOVE it they cuddle down in it just like a mother hen, run in and out seem much more at ease and less noisy. You can do much less heat light (still need the light especially at first) but the feathers trap the body heat of the chicks keeping them much warmer on less light. They can escape the light and still be warm. I will never brood chicks myself w/o these feather dusters again. We have raised 2 groups w/ them and the difference is amazing.

Brilliant I think I may have to do an adaptation of that for use with my brooding set up I have one of those yellow brinsea ones that can brood up to 20 chicks, I think if i add a couple feather duster bits to it it might make them even happier.

You've given me a great idea on how to use the many rooster tail feathers and others that I've saved! I'll make feather dusters with them and have an all natural Momma replacement duster. Thanks.:)

What will you use to hold them together?

(I was also thinking about molt time when it looks like a predator struck the hen shed...

I'm not sure but I suppose a dowel, glue and tape? If anyone knows how to make them, please let us know!

I was thinking hot glue and a wrapping material (cord or wire) put a feather on w/ hot glue then a quick single wrap while the glue is still warm and repeat, starting at the base and working up the stick part.

I love the dusters. I think using a wrap technique called 'whipping' may work well. Could use cord or thread even.

The vid is for the end of a rope (which I have used to for most commonly) but it could work well to fasten the feather shafts to a dowel. O few drops of glue once done would probably give some added piece of mind too.

Kassaundra, I love this. What a nifty idea. So good for the babies. Good job.

Both should work well. :)
