DO NOT order from grow a frog

All I know about frogs is use a 22 pellet rifle and gig .Skin and batter them hind legs fried with a ice cold beer YUMMCheers

Grow a frog is a Florida based marketing company. They sell grow a frog kits which consists of a tadpole, tadpole food, a guide book, blue sand, and a small plastic tank. I thought it would be fun to try. The first tadpole that I got was dead. I called them and they were real nice about it and they said they would ship me another one right away. 6-7 months later another tadpole arrived. This one was healthy. I didn't put him/her in that tiny little 1/2 to 3/4 gallon plastic tank, instead I put him/her in a slightly bigger 2-2 1/2 gallon tank that I had. He/she grew into a frog and a moved him/her to a 10 gallon tank with a filter that had a healthy female betta fish and 4 scissortail rasboras. A few days later the betta fish died. I soon found out that the frog was an invasive species called an African clawed frog and was illegal to own without a permit in 11 states (luckily not in my state, Florida, so I'm not going to jail) and my betta fish most likely died from the frogs skin toxins. I quickly moved the frog back to its previous tank.

What bothers me is that the grow a frog company knows that they are distributing invasive frogs around the country. They also state in the manual that the frog will get "around the size of a half dollar". I did some research and found out that it will get up to five inches or about the size of your palm.

I'm also concerned about the welfare of the frogs. The tank they send the frog in, as a previously stated, is extremely small, like a tiny plastic prison. The "bigger" tanks they advertise also look extremely tiny. It also says nothing of how they keep their frogs that they breed and I couldn't even find a picture online so I assume that they are kept in tiny little tanks also.

It says online on the grow a frog website that they could send me a "breathable bag" and I could ship my frog back for free but what would they do with the frog? Breed it? Kill it? Just keep it in a tiny plastic prison? He supposedly gets lonely but I'm not going to buy another invasive frog just so another invasive frog isn't lonely.

Just DONT buy from grow a frog.
I feel it’s worth noting that MOST pets are invasive animals. That doesn’t mean you should not get a second when you already have one if they’re better off not being kept alone. If you have one already, a second changes nothing. You can get one from a different source if you don’t want to use the original. But “invasive” isn’t really a good reason to keep it alone if it’s not meant to be alone. Again- almost all pets are invasive and would be problematic if released.

As for the betta thing- it’s not the specific species, there is no frog in existence that would be safe to keep with a betta fish. Not even dwarfs are a good idea in a 10 gallon with a betta. There are very very few animals that are safe to keep with bettas. They’re small, territorial fish, if something doesn’t kill them, they’ll probably kill it.

If anyone comes across this and has made the same mistake- please do not let the title “invasive” stop you from getting a friend for your frog. Unless it is illegal, in which case you need to relocate or euthanize the original.

You are the one that's wrong, they are the ones that are right. Their frogs DO reach the size of a half dollar. It's their wild types that do. This is because their wild types are a different variant of Clawed Frog called a Tropical Clawed Frog/Western Clawed Frog. TCFs/WCFs reach a much smaller size/only the size of a half dollar. I have a Grow-a-Frog at home, his name is Frogbob, and he's only about that size. Frogbob is 2 inches long and he is a very cute little boy.

Frogbob here is only about 2 inches long and that's probably about as big as he's gonna get. I ordered him from Grow-a-Frog.

My video of when I first got him, I cannot express how happy I was when he first showed up in my life, I love him so much to bits -

As for these frogs being invasive, like, dude, that's only if you release them out into the wild. Them being invasive is not something to pin against Grow-a-Frog, they say on their site not to release them. I would highly recommend not housing African Clawed Frogs or Tropical Clawed Frogs with betta fish because those frogs are very carnivorous, but one thing's for sure, they do not produce "skin toxins" that kill fish. They can be housed with a variety of other fish. I feel like you're mostly mad at the cute little froggy because you didn't do research with what kind of fish these frogs should be housed with earlier and are blaming Grow-a-Frog for your own lack of knowledge you had before trying to get this type of frog. I housed two with three goldfish in a 30 gallon tank when I was a teenager and it went well.

Guys, DO order from Grow-a-Frog, they are a nice company with nice people running it. These frogs being an invasive species in some areas is not a reason to deny them business. My only issue is they didn't specify that the Albinos shouldn't be housed with the Wild Types (due to their Albinos being African Clawed Frogs rather than Tropical Clawed Frogs and therefore reach the 5 inch size) on their website and only told me that in email after I asked about Frogbob and Lily's different claw counts, that's it. Not wanting to get another for your current froggy just because it's invasive in some places is cruelty because these frogs are intelligent social animals and need company.
