Do you prefer barred rocks or dominiques?

I'm looking at getting a couple new hens and was interested in these birds. Can someone tell me the differences between the two? Not looks wise, but personality wise? Our chickens are pets first and foremost so we're looking for friendly and less flighty. Thank you!

Dominiques tend to lay more eggs than Plymouth Rocks. They both may go broody but I've never had a Plymouth Rock set. Plymouth Rocks grow faster and finish out larger than Diminiques. They are both calm breeds. Dominiques may be more genial if allowed to free range. If kept in confinement they may be more flighty than Rocks.

I've never had Barred Rocks, but have two Dominiques...they aren't flighty at all, but they do free-range all day. They've been good layers and they're feathers are very soft and almost velvet-feeling. My grandson loves to touch them...and they don't seem to mind too much. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I have a Barred Rock and she's the sassiest and one of the most social birds I have. Sassy but not mean. I can walk right up and pick her up. Also one of the biggest despite being only 6 months (others between 1.5 and 2.5 yrs). Her fluff is SO SOFT. No experience with Dominiques though.

I have had several Barred Rock hens through the years and would recommend them based on your criteria. I have never had large breed Dominiques myself but my Grandpa did and he loved them. I do currently have 5 Barred Rock Bantam hens and 2 Dominique Bantam hens and have enjoyed them. Only one of the Barred Rock hens got broody this year but both of the Dominique hens were that way most of the summer.
