dog ear infections......

anyone have any natural cures for a dog ear infection? or anything i can buy at tsc for it? i have been cleaning it out and putting ear cleaner in and it looks a bit better but i am pretty sure its infected.

This works well, and is cheap to make with ingredients you can buy at most drug stores:



Blue Power Ear Wash Recipe:

16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol

4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder

16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.

Shake this solution every time you use it to mix the Boric Acid Powder.


Fill the ear canal and rub it around, then let them shake out the excess.
Use as often as needed

Also you can use 1/3 part vinegar and 2/3part water and do the same thing with filling up the ear canal and rubbing it around. Do this every other day as a preventive measure.

The above recipe sounds very effective, but that gentian violet is killer! I have it sprayed all over the inside of my coop from doctoring a chicken that kept shaking it's head and it has stained the walls so that I can't clean it off!

When all else fails, change diet. Many ear problems with dogs start with food allergies. Since I have been feeding TOTW I no longer have ear problems with my beagles. This includes one male whose ears had been cultured twice and the proper medication vet prescribed. I could control the problem but never cure it. Right now his ears are clean and non irritated.

Does it smell yeasty or appear red and cracked? What symptoms are present to make you think it's infected? Dogs can get all sorts of uncomfortable conditions of the ear. I've had good luck treating active infections with vetricyn.

You can now buy a product called Zymox over the counter in Petsmart. It's a combination of enzymes that work together to kill yeast and bacteria. I've had many Labs over the years, the stuff works and now you don't need to get it from the vet.

I am going to agree with the Zymox! I have a Lab mix who I had at the vet every month with an ear infection. One of the techs told me about the Zymox and said it works for some dogs and not for others. I ordered it from Pet Meds, they have 2 kinds, 1 with H2O2, and 1 without. I got both, used the one with H2O2 once a day for 10 days, then switched to the one without once a week. The thing with Zymox though is that you shouldn't use anything else with it. My girl hasn't had any kind of ear trouble since I started using it, I think it's wonderful stuff!

OMG! I was going to ask about this myself. My dog had a huge amount of dark wax coming out of his ear. Kept cleaning it out, would walk around flipping his head side to side. So after cleaning out the wax, then seeing bloody/brown liquid in ear. I kept cleaning it out, then tonight, the ear has some wax, brown liquid, took the flashlight and looked even deeper I saw what looked like black hairs deep in the ear. Took out the tweezers and reached in. I pulled 2 grass seeds out! They had red blood liquid all over them. I did see what looked like yellow/greenish fluid. So an infection has started. I hope that there was only the two seeds in there. They are from the ornamental grass that has infected my yard! Poor dog!
