Lighter coloration supposedly a characteristic of strain my birds are largely derived from. A couple of the breeders I confer with commented on the light coloration of some of my birds at show. The commenting I think was a suppressed indication of disapproval. I will not eliminate the light coloration although I will reduce its frequency.

Free-ranging as much as possible will get you those dark yolks. We supplement, especially this time of year, with a whole grain mixture we make ouselves, no pellets, but mostly they feed themselves. Our Marans eggs are a touch darker but our Dom eggs are nice and dark, too.

We were at a hotel a while back and gave our 4 year old some eggs from the breakfast bar. He looked at them and said, "but they're not yellow." He had a few bites and then said, "these eggs are yucky." Ahh, so nice to have fresh eggs at home, isn't it?

Yes! There is no comparison. So sad to think I spent so many years never having had fresh eggs - and so sad to think how lots of people (most?) will never taste a fresh egg!

I am trying to fill incubator for first time this year. Cold front and failure to watch clock caused loss of a dozen hatching eggs. This cold snap is penetrating.

Up here we have been warmer than usual.

My first set of Doms, a small set, are due next weekend.

Not exactly fare is it. I am so much closer to the equator yet the weather keeps throwing us what you should have a monopoly on.
