Dominique Thread!

I lost during the nighttime.
In New Hampshire as livestock owners we are allowed to dispatch any predator that destroys or kills our livestock. And in NH it is illegal to relocate coons because there are so many of them. I borrowed my friend’s coon trap and trapped four coons and like I said can’t relocate them, so dispatching them was the only way. But on the bright side my friend was able to skin em and sell the pelts. So the coons didn’t go to waste.

Here’s an update on my little pullet Marzo. She’s 19 weeks today, and in that adorable phase where she makes those sweet soft squeaky sounds. She’s just as happy to snuggle in my lap as my Dominique hen, Juin. I just wish they’d be friends, but I’ll give it time. They were both egg-songing together the other day, which is encouraging. I’d only ever heard Juin sing once before, and Marzo never. It was super cute!

That is great that your friend could sell the pelts!

Nice!

Guess what I got!

I actually have three girls left at the moment. However, due to the current flock size, I can only add one. I am trying to pick my favorite before people come to pick up the other two.
(I already sold 2 girls and gave away the boys we hatched) There seems to be a crazy rush on chicks this year. Probably because of egg prices. So many people will have a rude awakening when they realize chickens cost more than eggs.

Great that you can sell birds & have homes for the boys. As I recall you always kept a good-sized flock. Our ordinance only allows 5 hens/no roos.

All we have left from the previous flock is Dominique "Dana" almost 8 & she's alpha over 5 Silkie hens which will be our last flock. I'm an octogenarian & don't want a flock outliving me!

I used to breed English Orpingtons. Life changes and I had to cut back. Broke my heart to let them go. For the next 2 years I worked with the new owner teaching him about orps and deciding which were breeders or culls. He had all my best birds! I’ve the last year the roosters were killed. I helped replace them but those and several back ups were also killed. By the time his last rooster was taken in February, he only had 8 hens left. A few days later I went there to save the survivors. Only 2. 😥 12 years of breeding gone! I don’t know why he didn’t keep them in the barn and run when they were being slaughtered daily.

Anyway, I’m caring for my 95 yr old father and my disabled sister. They need daily assistance so I’m running both households (shopping, cooking, cleaning, driving, laundry, scheduling etc). I also have a part time job because my husband can no longer work. It’s overwhelming but we still have chickens. They are pets. We have 2 mini roosters so we can hatch “useless chickens” (aka Seramas and Silkies). I also know several people with poultry who are willing to give me eggs

Here are my last 3 fav chicks

Purple is the most outgoing
The only thing I dislike is the slightly crooked comb tip. This would be my choice but the asymmetry bothers me and I worry it might become more noticeable in time.

Green is the prettiest. I like the dainty face. Loves pets but also loves to explore

Pink loves to stretch out her neck and cuddle. It’s so endearing. She’s a bit bigger with wider comb. She is not as pretty and doesn’t come running up to my hand like the other two. But, once I rub her head, she loves it

So this is my tough decision of the day. All are great with the typical friendly curious personality.
